BUSY!
02 August, 2001 at 01:32 PM by Ren | Permalink
I've had such a busy week!
I should have a phone by the end of the week too! yay! no furniture yet : ) at least though, I'll have a phone! Um...Yeah, work has been pretty busy lately; today I put up a photo gallery and I'll finish up the staff/faculty newsletter as well as do a presentation for the Academic Council on what my job actually can do for them. Pretty important shiznit huh?
Wow. Nothing else interesting going on here. I should go get lunch, and then prepare for my meeting. Lord, meeting with the "academic council" sounds like I'm going before a tribunal and they will evaluate me for entrance into the tribe or something.
Birthday!
03 August, 2001 at 03:21 PM by Ren | Permalink
Well, it has just occurred to me that my 5th 21st birthday is only 28 days away. To help you prepare for this joyous occasion (Really, you only turn 21 for the 5th time once!), I'm preparing a list of things I'd like to get for my birthday. If you have the means, please, help a brotha out!
A new car - I'm really diggin on the new Nissan Sentras. If you can help me get into one, we can break it in together *winkwink*
A sofa for my living room - I'm toying with the idea of getting a futon, so be it noted. It should be something black with a natural maple wood finish (if you get me one with wood), although at this point, anything to sit on will be welcome.
Cash - there's nothing like this present. Nothing says "I have no idea what you want" better than cash! There's something special about getting a big fat $20 from grandma. Or your favorite friend, for that matter.
Old Navy Gift Card - Props to Old Navy. The fall collection should be coming out, and I need some sporty new digs.
Best Buy Gift Card - the BB gift card rocks. I can use it to pay for my favorite rock bands unbridled excess, or use it to further the profit margins of my favorite japanese electronics corporation, sometimes both.
Nameplate for my office - No one knows who I am at work. Sure, I have a nametag, but I need something to sit on my desk that shows my stature here. "Rene Echavarri - University Webmaster" is quite appropriate.
Business Card Holder thing - We put the order in for business cards way back in May, and I still don't have them. This is good though, because I don't have anything to hold them in so you may take one from my desk. Help me out here kids!
World Domination - This is just a pipe dream, but if I were in charge, the world would be a much better place. Also, there would be more spontaneous musical numbers too, a'la Austin Powers or any Gap Commercial.
Gap - Anything cute from the Gap would be real nice. They always have nice stuff there.
Structure - I need a few new shirts, and they have some nice ones there.
I realize some of the things I asked for are a bit excessive, and most of them I won't ever possibly get. But really, I can dream, can't I? If you love me (and believe me you do), you'll dig deep into your savings accounts and buy me some happy.
Is this too much to ask for?

I've discovered something very important about my old apartment.
It had "come to work late" mojo. For real. Ever since I moved to my new apartment, getting to work on time is not a problem.
For those of you who care, there is a new poll up on the front page.
I bought $90 worth of food yesterday. When did food get so expensive? DAYUM! Of course, it all came in instant form, so maybe that is why. Doesn't matter, really. At least I can now subsist on more than bologna and cheese.
I started watching that new show "Six Feet Under." Those people are so screwed up. Are there really people that messed up in real life? I mean, i'm not textbook case of normal, but really...on TV if you're not bizarre, you're just not ready for primetime.
I guess there's not much else going on in my life right now. There are just 25 days until my birthday. With any luck, I won't remember any of that night ; ) Not anything else going on. My phone is now working for those of you that have my number.
Oh, did anyone else watch that MTV Live and Almost Legal? Did anyone else find it as boring as I did? Man what a chore! I only watched through Martha Quinn claiming she invented MTV and then I got about as interested as Carson Daly on any given episode of TRL and changed the channel to Jeff Corwin on Animal Planet. That show was such a DRAG. The MTV one that is. Jeff Corwin rocks.
My Anti-Drug

ok, I know its not *MY* anti drug, but I wish I had thought of it first. Read all about this guy's Anti Drug. That is all...
Still on the Anti-Drug Kick
09 August, 2001 at 10:22 PM by Ren | Permalink
Ok,
On the whole anti-drug kick, I have just discovered *my* anti-drug: My Car Janet. You see, whenever I think about taking drugs, my good old car Janet breaks down, and costs several hundred dollars to repair (ok, not that much, but you get the point). . .thus leaving me no money for drugs!
Janet. My Anti-Drug.
Friday. *sigh*
11 August, 2001 at 01:21 AM by Ren | Permalink
Here I am, at home on a Friday night. How sad is that? I should be out getting drunk and partying. Instead, I'm at home. Read up about the whole "anti-drug" thing...thank you janet!
Turns out, my car died yesterday, thus eliminating all my spare money for the month. woo! So now, I'm at home, pining over what I'm going to do. It's ok though, I'm going out tomorrow. Twenty bucks and all; I'll be the poor fool in the back. Buy me a drink if you read this!
In other news, I'm super proud of my cousin Jessica. After trying and trying to pass a stupid test touted by W. as a measure of what the Texas schools are accomplishing, she finally passed! She can finally get her High School Diploma. I'm so proud of you Jess! Anyway, about that W. thing. Testing as the sole way to determine whether you get the diploma is a big crock of honky. Some people, smart though they may be, simply don't fare well on tests. Some people like me, do surprisingly well on tests, mainly because I know how the tests are usually made, and can discern which answers are obviously false (and basically find the right answer by deduction). Anyway, as a person who has a degree with a background in education...standardized testing blows. All the teachers end up teaching is how to pass the test; they are supposed to teach kids how to learn! Not how to pass a freaking test.
I'm not saying testing is a bad thing. It does serve a good purpose. But to tie everything into good scores on one test...what a recipe for disaster. Believe me, when I student taught, we had TAAS (the Texas test thingy)crammed down our throats, and I was an extracurricular teacher. School virtually stopped during the week testing took place. No homework, no new material presented, just the test.
Yeah, that's how to learn.
History channel

I'm here at home enjoying some dinner. Yes, "it" can cook. :P Anyway, I'm watching the History Channel, and I realize that I need to stop watching the World War II specials, because everytime they show something on the Holocaust, I become so horribly depressed.
It's just horrible to see what people can do. Horrific.
I don't want to get depressed, so I'll talk about work. I just put up 5 new wallpapers, and am working on three (yes three) new websites :) Aren't I the overachiever? I also got my evaluation (the probationary one) only slightly under a month late ; ) I "meet expectations" WOO! Perhaps next time, I'll "exceed expectations." I hope so; I'm very excited to tell you guys that www.tamuk.edu was said to be "the best website in all of the system (the Texas A&M University System that is)" by two different people at the communication offices for the TAMU System.
Rock on me.
What were we thinking?

I'm watching re-runs of Saturday night live on Comedy Central, and right now they're showing the musical guest...Ricky Martin.
America, WHAT WERE WE THINKING? I mean, sure the song was fun back in 1999...but its 2001, and that song is totally dated now. Livin' la vida loca, REALLY. I'm concerned for us.
There are 13 days until my birthday. Plan accordingly.
Lord, It's barely 3:30. This

Lord, It's barely 3:30. This day has dragged on and on. I rearranged my office though. How exciting! back to the daily trudge.
I don't know how exactly

I don't know how exactly I managa to forget this, but everytimg Star Trek V is on TV, I watch it. It's horrible bad. I mean just *bad*. Yet, here I am, watching it. There *must* be nothing on TV.
It's funny, I won't say I know how to direct a movie or whatever, but goddamn, its like William Shatner tore off the head of Star Trek and took a big poopy right down its throat. This is just bad moviemaking at its highest.
One of my favorite websites, mightybigtv, even did a review of it in preperation for the new ST series, Enterprise. Check out their Star Trek V review here.
Speaking of bad directorial choices, don't get me started on Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. What's wrong with you people!?!
8 days until my birthday
24 August, 2001 at 11:59 PM by Ren | Permalink
With just over a week to go until my birthday, I'm getting restless. Here's the good news: I paid off all my bills! i'm caught up! YAY! New car here I come!
Bad news: I'M AT FREAKING HOME ON A FRIDAY NIGHT. This is becoming an all too common occurrence. Although it does save me a lot of money, staring at my cat, the Evil Lord Skittles Kevin Joshua is not something I want to make a habit of. If you're just as bored as I am on a friday...I do not recommend staring at your pet; they get REALLY freaked out.
On other fronts, my new webboy, fresh from conquering the worlds of Advertising (ask me some other time about this) conquered the worlds of the Javelina Bulletin. Yes, my padawan webboy has learned much in just one sitting. What's next for him? Why, SCANNING of course : ) What a wonderful WebMaster I am.
I'm so bored right now, I'm seriously contemplating a redesign of my site. Geez...that's pathetic.

Two Days Until My Birthday.
Right now, i'm sitting here eating the worlds best breakfast taco. See, this guy in town, Mr. Salinas, makes a styrofoam cooler full of delicious tacos in the morning. He does this every morning. They're only a buck. They ROCK. I'm enjoying Potato, bacon and egg right now. Very snacky.
It won't stop raining here in south texas; not that i'm complaining. The weather rules right now. It's really cool and grey and not nearly as oppressive as it was just three days ago. Very nice.
All in all, a good morning.

tomorrow is my birthday.
I have yet to receive a birthday card from those people who spawned me. I don't think I should be concerned...yet. I'll be sad tomorrow though. Today was fun at work, I got this awesome cake, and a really cute card. Now lets see if my best friend decides to not go to the friggen Aerosmith concert and spend a day with me. bastard!
It's still raining in South Texas...its really quite nice. Its kept the temperature down, and the humidity low...when its raining that is. AS soon as it stops raining it gets REALLY steamy; you might as well be living in the Amazon.
I guess I should go find something to go eat, I'm starving, and the Evil Lord Skittles-Kevin Joshua won't make me anything besides cat food...or litter box surprise. Neither of which is appealing.
