Upgraded

I upgraded Movable Type yesterday to version 3.31. So if you notice some things acting funny (i.e. the comments) that's why. I'm still figuring out how to use this new system. It's hella powerful.

That is all.

How I now own two PowerBooks

19 July, 2006 at 08:21 AM by Ren | Permalink

I promised I'd talk about this a little more some other time.

That time is now.

So, a couple weeks ago, I noticed Hayden--that's my PowerBook--was deciding to go to sleep at weird times. Not like when he would run out of power or I was not using him for 20 minutes or so, but just whenever. I'd be typing an email and BAM. Sleep mode. Or, I'd be chatting with a friend and the screen goes black and the throbbing white light of sleep would turn on.

Really sort of annoying, actually.

And then, as abruptly as it started, it stopped.

But only for a time; a week after it stopped going narcoleptic on me, it started up again. I couldn't figure out what was causing it. On a Friday afternoon after it started sleeping incessently--I'm talking every 2 minutes here--I figured maybe something was wrong with the battery. I had been noticing that it wasn't holding charge like it had been..down from about three hours to a little over one hour. So maybe it thought it had charge, but actually had none at all, and would just go to sleep over it. I don't know, it made sense at the time. There I am, crouched under my desk to make sure all the cables were plugged in properly and that Hayden was drawing power properly. In doing that, I inadvertently get my arm tangled in one of the wires I was checking on. I got out from under the desk with the wire still around my arm.

Oops.

Hayden met the armrest on my desk chair. Yeah, they didn't get along so well. My chair hit Hayden right in the face. Cracked the LCD. Ouch.

Horrified at what I had just done, I shut Hayden off, and turned him back on in the vain hope that I didn't actually just break the screen. But I did. A spectacular disaster. Giant cracks from the point of impact radiated throughout half the screen.

So, I called Apple to see what those nice folks could do for me. "AppleCare doesn't cover accidental damage." WHAT? FUCK. The guy, who was terribly nice, so I couldn't be ugly and/or mean to him gave me the numbers for a couple certified repair shops nearby. One in Corpus, one in the Rio Grande Valley and one slightly North, in Victoria.

Call up the Corpus Christi CompUSA and the guy, very brusquely says to me that a repair on an LCD will run me $800, "but I can guarantee you it'll be more than that. That's just a ballpark." Oh, that's nice.

Call up the RGV store and they say "what they told you in Corpus is what they'll tell you here." And then the Victoria place? Holy shit, the price was insane.

I call up Apple, hoping maybe they'll be cheaper to repair, since that is where I got the fucking computer from. The extremely nice lady (I think her name was Jen) said that the repair is running $1200. FUCK. ME. RUNNING.

$1200? I could buy a new computer for that much money.

So I did. After a bit of soul-searching, and some price hunting by the nice lady at Apple, I found a comparable PowerBook to my mortally wounded Hayden. It's not exactly a new PowerBook; It's a refurb G4. I really wanted a refurb Intel Mac, but that was about $300 out of my price range. Dammit!

Hemming and hawing about paying Bank of America's hard earned money, Jen (tongue-in-cheek, i'm sure) tells me "the shipping is free." It better be.

I got my new (well, new to me) PowerBook a week ago. I named him Anakin, so that way if I break Anakin, my next laptop will be named Vader (Vader kills Anakin, from a certain point of view).

ANYWAY, I had just recently backed up most of my data to DVD and whatnot, so performing the Fal-Tor-Pan between Hayden and Anakin wasn't too hard, but it just served to remind me what a horrific thing I had done.

Funny story, though. I had been planning on moving to a new complex when my lease runs out in October. The same complex that Krysdol works at. I called her the day I slaughtered my beloved Hayden.

Ren: Krysdol, I dont' think I'm going to be moving in October.
Krysdol: Why???
Ren: Because today I totally killed my computer and spent $1300 buying a new one.
Krysdol: [dead silence]
...
...
Friend, if you really didn't want to move, you didn't have to break your computer. I would've understood.

*sigh* If only that were the reason. Rest in peace Hayden Tastabook. And may you live long and prosper, Anakin Tastabook.
