athletic logo

Shortly after the new marketing campaign was introduced, people across the campus began clamoring for the new javelina. One of the louder voices was that of the athletic department.
For years, Javelina Athletics was represented by this outdated cartoon sketch of the Javelinas mascot, Porky. For the start of the 2003 Javelina football season, I created a new logo based on the javelina icon, both to update athletics' image and to better match the university's new marketing campaign.
The prime challenge in creating this logo was the loud, vocal minority in regards to the university's name change some eleven years before. Many fans refuse to accept the university's name change and several won't attend if the event is promoted as a Texas A&M-Kingsville event. Rather than rubbing their faces in a name they didn't care for, I decided to prominently feature the word "Javelinas" and situate the school name underneath that.
Other older fans dislike the streamlined javelina, so a version was created that features only the word "Javelinas" (no javelina head).
The approved variations are listed below.
- The full logo
The final version of the full athletics logo. - Words and Ellipses
This version features only the text, no javelina head; it most often shows up on football programs. - Just the javelina
This version features just the javelina head in the ellipses. This version is most popular with the local media (TV, newspapers) and students on campus. - Just the Words
This is the version that most often shows up in posters and other materials where space is limited. It's also seen as a bumper sticker.
As an alumnus of the university I take pride in improving the image of my university. Luckily other people agree: this logo won a Silver ADDY® from the Corpus Christi Ad Club.
